about kid mohair (baby mohair)

What is KID Mohair?

Mohair is the fiber produced from Angora goats — a beautiful, luxurious, incredibly warm and durable yarn. Baby Mohair is the shearings from baby, or kid, goats at the first two opportunities at 6 months and 12 months. The coat is at its softest before the goat matures and the hair becomes coarse. Baby Mo uses only the finest, kid mohair to deliver a soft, plush feel. This exceptional yarn is hand-dyed and loomed to weave a range of unique products.

Mohair comes only from goats that originated in the region we now call Asiatic Turkey — Angora is seen as a different pronunciation of the word "Ankara." In the 1830s, Colonel John Henderson introduced the Angora goat to South Africa and a new industry emerged.

South African farmers have refined the breed, creating the highest quality of kid mohair produced today. Goats, young or old, are shorn twice yearly given a winter and summer clipping. The animals are not harmed and need this care. South Africa produces around 70 percent of the world's mohair.

BabyMo only uses kid mohair shorn in that first year. Because there are more adults than kids, Kid hair is in great demand and commands high prices – but Mother Nature requires you can't have kids without adults. And South African goats are so prized that exporting live goats is prohibited.

BABY MO is an artisanal, luxury item

weaving baby mohair

Baby Mo goods are made by a small group of weavers at a worker-owned factory in Mandela Bay — "the mohair capital of the world." Most of these women came from disadvantaged communities and learned the weaver's skill. These factories enable upward mobility and a lifelong trade for women to share their work with the world.

Yarn dying is done by hand in our own dye house with a range of dozens of hues. Because yarn is dyed before the weaving process, especially for hand-loomed throws, a combination of colored yarns taken together produces a dynamic, luminous blends. All the throws are hand-brushed when completed to burst the pile and create the signature fluff of baby mohair.
